Cheb Mami is probably the best known name in Algerian Rai music these days, thanks to the collaboration with Sting on the song 'Desert Rose', which became a huge international hit. But long before that he'd enjoyed a massive career, which continues to grow.
Cheb Mami is the pioneer of a new "raï ¡ttitude" whose objective is to universalize 'raï§ by opening it up to Western influences while at the same time carefully preserving its traditional character. Today, Cheb is principally acclaimed for a golden high-pitched voice which ascends the scales with voluptuous grace.
Mami's new album entitled 'Dellali' (The Loved One) features a rich mix of languages and musical influences, including everything from house and Flamenco to reggae and African music.
Mami's vocals are as brilliant as ever and the album also features an impressive list of guest stars ? including contributions from Charles Aznavour ('Viens habibi') to Bob Marley's son, Ziggy ('Madanite') and the famous guitarist Chet Atkins.
